How to Prevent Gum Disease

Posted .

Wouldn’t you like to make sure that your smile is free of gum disease? If so, our dentist, Dr. Peter D Kim, is happy to hear that! Gum disease is one of the more serious dental issues, and it’s best to prevent gum disease instead of just addressing it. Gum disease starts with a buildup of plaque on your teeth. That plaque can can cause your gums to swell and then recede, resulting in loose, and even lost teeth. Our dentist recommends the following things to prevent gum disease:

-Keep up on oral hygiene: Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash can all help remove the plaque and bacteria from your teeth and gumline. This needs to be done every day or the plaque will begin to build up and promote gum disease. So, make sure you include brushing, flossing and rinsing in your oral hygiene routine each day.

-Attend your checkups: Your dental checkups are vital to preventing gum disease. This is because the cleaning you will receive in our office removes the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the teeth and gumline. If these substances are allowed to build up on your teeth, they will become very difficult to remove with just your toothbrush and dental floss. In fact, your dental cleaning is the only technique that can remove tartar. So, make sure to attend your checkups every six months.
